Have you started preparing for winter in Calgary? You have created a beautiful landscape that you are proud of, but now winter is within sight and you are worried about your plants lasting through the cold. The real question is, how do we protect our gardens from ice, frost, and snow this winter, while still making our walkways accessible.
While it may appear that all activities in your garden have paused for the winter, there is actually a lot going on under the soil until it freezes. If you have planted new trees, bulbs, or other vegetation it’s important to ensure that they have the moisture, nutrients, and protection needed to survive the winter. The de-icing products that you use are also important, to ensure that your plants can resurface come springtime.
Although mulch cannot completely protect soil or plants it will help to keep the soil at an even temperature and will act as insulation. Premium mulch reduces the amount of freezing and thawing and keeps it at a more consistent temperature.
In short, mulch has the following benefits:
So, you are protecting your plants with mulch; but how do we de-ice walkways without harming the plants? Eagle Lake Professional Landscaping Supply has released a premium Pickled Mix and Sanding Chips range that are specifically engineered to help your garden walkways this winter season.
Available for pick up and delivery, both in bulk and 1 cubic yard bags, the 7mm Wash Rock Sanding Mix and 5mm Rock Salt/7mm Wash Rock blend are ideal for use on sidewalks, driveways, and streets. Our blend contains 5% Coarse Road De-Icing Salt.
Please call 403-262- 5600 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for pricing.
Although Pickled Mix and Sanding Chips are used for traction and grip on walkways, we need to make sure that this is not applied near the plants and is evenly distributed. Even if you are using de-icer or another salt blend this tool will become your best friend. This Ice Melt Spreader tool is as the name suggests, it is used to ensure that the pickled mix and sanding chips, ice melt, or rock blends are spread evenly and accurately to the intended area. This product can also be used to spread fertilizer, seed, and any granular material.

A lush lawn needs healthy soil and ‘Top-Dressing’ or adding a thin layer of rich soil or compost over your lawn can improve the soil without damaging existing turf. Big Yellow Bag’s Alberta Gold Black Garden Soil contains the ideal blend of black peat moss and Class A compost to enrich existing lawns. Top-Dressing improves lawns as organic matter breaks down and filters through existing soil to improve texture and overall health.
When to Top-Dress:
How to Top Dress:
Step 1: Aerate
Lawns should be aerated every 2-3 years so start with a core aeration. This removes plugs of soil from the ground to leave channels for air, water, and top-dressing mixture to penetrate the lawn.
Step 2: Apply Top-Dressing
Shovel out small sections (2-3 shovelfuls) of Alberta Gold Black Garden Soil onto your lawn at spaced intervals. Spread the top-dressing mix ½” or less over the existing grass using the back side of a heavy garden rake, working it into aeration holes and covering low spots.
Step 3: Water and Adjust
Water the area well, let the lawn settle for a day or two, then go back with your rake and smooth out any hollows or bumps.
Step 4: Plant Grass if Needed
Replant grass in any bare spots. Existing grass should be able to grow through as much as an inch of top-dressing.
